RosettaNet upbeat about Malaysia-made International Standard for Global SMIs KUALA LUMPUR, 22 October 2007 – RosettaNet today announced a Malaysian-made international standard in an effort to encourage the mass global small medium industries (SMI) community to automate their procurement processes for a more conducive global e-commerce business environment. In a media briefing held this afternoon, RosettaNet Malaysia director Foong Heng Huo said that the RosettaNet Automated Enablement standard (RAE) provides for a low-cost RosettaNet Implementation Solution for smaller trading partners with the added benefits of accelerated implementation periods and lower investment cost. For local companies, RosettaNet is the only B2B (business-to-business) standard supported by the Malaysian Government as it has proven 100% error-free for forecast-to-cash procurement processes whilst cutting down substantially on manual transactions. What's more, local Malaysian companies can also apply for the RosettaNet Malaysia Grant (administered by SMIDEC) as there is a RM5 million government grant for them to be on RosettaNet. The RAE, with its simpler implementation framework, was made possible through RosettaNet Malaysia's technological collaboration with Microsoft Malaysia and, when used in conjunction ECMA Open XML – which in itself is also an international open document standard supported by IT giants such as Apple, Novell and others – facilitates innovative technology solutions that will enable SMIs to participate in this lucrative global automated business community at minimal cost . “ Having proven itself to be a successful standard with large enterprises and multinationals operating in Malaysia, RosettaNet is now moving into its next phase of encouraging local Small Medium Industries (SMIs) to automate their procurement processes,” said Foong, adding that technology is a powerful business enabler for SMEs to compete and thrive in the international arena. “Open XML opens up exciting opportunities for RAE based solutions – such as its support for custom defined schemas which facilitates wider success of e-commerce – while assuring users of of long-term preservation of data,” said Foong. ”Another benefit of OpenXML for the SMI community is its capability of storing and managing business data in documents, resulting in lower cost for implementing business process automation that enhances global competitiveness,” Foong added. “And with SMIs making up 99.2% of total business establishments in the country, they should take advantage of RAE to further automate their processes, make profitable decisions and accelerate growth.” Foong further said that, although the rapid flow of information will continue to transform business processes and procedures – which in turn gives rise to what is known today as a ‘knowledge-based' economy – Malaysian SMIs should realise that the promise of technology lies in the power it unleashes to create greater productivity and operational efficiencies. “Technology's true role is to augment and improve operations – and this is what the RAE which interoperates with OpenXML is all about.” RosettaNet standards used globally were created and are maintained by Malaysians in Malaysia, effectively making RosettaNet “Made in Malaysia” . “The RAE is another feather in the cap for the country as it provides for an international standard that is easy to use and familiar to business users at large, similar to how the world is familiar with Microsoft applications,” said Foong. To commemorate this achievement and also the 5 th anniversary of RosettaNet Malaysia, the Honourable Chief Minister of Penang, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon will be officiating the upcoming RosettaNet Global Partner Conference which will be held on 29 and 30 October. Previous conferences were held in Beijing and Shanghai in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Due to overwhelming response from around the world, RosettaNet is extending the registration period for the conference till end of the week. Meanwhile, RosettaNet Engineering director Kamarul Zaman said that, in today's competitive global business environment, it is vital for local SMIs to successfully leverage RAE for that competitive advantage: “The demo planned at the Global Partner Conference will showcase how local SMIs could benefit, leverage and gain access into international cross border trade process simplification initiative driven by multiple standards synergy through RAE based implementation framework.” Meanwhile, Microsoft's National Technology Officer Dr Dzaharudin Mansor congratulated RosettaNet for having successfully created a “Made in Malaysia” standard for the global SMI community. “Some of the brightest IT scientists in the world comes from Malaysia and, while RosettaNet is world-renowned for its instrumental role in e-commerce, what is not widely made known is that that all RosettaNet standards are created in Malaysia – effectively making the RosettaNet a “Made in Malaysia” initiative by Malaysian service for the global business world at large,” said Dr Dzaharudin. “At Microsoft, we are pleased to have played our part in sharing our technical knowledge with RosettaNet, and predominantly our expertise with the ECMA International TC-45 standard more popular known as OpenXML,” he further said, adding that the OpenXML standard is supported by world-renowned companies such as Apple, Intel and Novell.
