Tech giants driving Rosetta standard

8Sep, 2007, 0136 hrs IST,J Padmapriya, TNN

BANGALORE: Just as a barcode changed the way retailers and manufacturers transacted, big daddies in hi-tech manufacturing sectors like PCs and mobile phones will be seen driving adoption of RosettaNet business standards, a web-enabled information exchange, with scores of their suppliers.

Named after Rosetta, the historical stone that led to deciphering of the ancient form of Egyptian writing (heiroglyphics), this technology will carry data and knowledge about 1,000s of components that go into any device.

Major players in India are expected to drive their supply chain and channel partners to convert to connect to the real-time information exchange as electronics products have a very high level of obsolescence and customisation.

Fairly popular in global electronics manufacturing hubs like Malaysia and Taiwan, RosettaNet is making inroads into India and some of the big players who are seen driving the initiative include LG, Samsung, Nokia, Intel, HP, Motorola and the like.

GS1 India chief executive Ravi Mathur told ET: “It is early days yet. We are working to sensitise the hi-tech manufacturing industry about Rosetta Net technology.” Mr Mathur says, it would take at least a couple of years when industry gets around adopting these standards.

GS1 standards are widely used in supply chain systems globally. In the organised retail sector, GS1 India has been fairly successful in pushing adoption of barcodes and is now driving use of RFID technology. RosettaNet is globally deployed in chemical, electrical components, IT, logistics, semiconductor manufacturing and

telecom sectors. India is a hub of mobile phone makers with the presence of five major players like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG. Such technologies will gain credence with the development of a supply chain and component base in India, he added.

As opposed to the traditional electronic data interchange model, RosettaNet is web-enabled and allows real-time data transfer and sharing. According to Mr Mathur, RosettaNet could bring down inventory levels from four to two weeks, reduce manual transactions and lead to 100% error-free forecast to cash procurement processes.

RosettaNet, an independent, non-profit organisation of over 500 organisations, was founded in the US in 1998. These organisations include some of the leading electronic components, computer and consumer electronics, semiconductor manufacturing, telecom, and logistics companies.
